Multiple reports confirmed her identity as Rabeya Sultana, a Bangladeshi-origin National and not an Indian citizen.

A video of the incident, which has circulated widely online, shows Sultana tearfully apologizing to police for forgetting to pay for men's clothing items worth approximately $200-$300.

The incident sparked significant online debate and political controversy in India, as some initial claims and opposition leaders misidentified her as an Indian citizen from Gujarat. However, multiple news reports and fact-checkers have since verified her identity as a Bangladeshi national.

The footage depicts Rabeya Sultana pleading with police officers, claiming she forgot to pay for men’s clothing items worth around $200-300, intended for her brother. She breaks down in tears, repeatedly apologizing and begging for forgiveness in a heavy South Asian accent.

The clip has amassed millions of views over time, with conflicting claims about her nationality.

Several Indian handles, especially political leaders, mostly belonging to the Opposition claimed that the lady is an Indian Gujarati - linking it to a purported “ethical crisis” under the BJP regime.
